SESSION GUIDE (NEWBORNS)
WHEN TO BOOK
There is such a small window of opportunity to create this style of newborn portraiture, between 5-10 days old is perfect so book early to avoid disappointment. The best time to book is after your 20 week scan. This way you will have piece of mind that there will be availability for your session. Your booking will be confirmed with the payment of your session fee.
WHAT SHOULD BABY WEAR?
Babies photograph best without any clothing at all. We like to pose them curled up showing all those little features that will disappear within weeks. Your baby will be professionally posed in a way that does not show any private parts. We love to pose baby on our beautiful stretch fabrics, in a colour that will compliment them and match your own style. We have an extensive supply of hats, bows, headbands and props for your session, but feel free bring along any special items that you would like us to use.
HOW TO PREPARE BABY FOR THE SESSION
We ask that you feed your baby upon arrival or before you leave home if it will just be a short journey. Having a belly full of milk means he/ she will sleep well for the session. We ask that you take all clothing off before feeding and use a blanket to swaddle so that we can begin the session with out too much disturbance to him/her. We ask that you feed on demand for the session if possible and do not be too strict on your feeding routine for this short time. A smooth session means more precious photos of your baby.
CAN WE ALSO HAVE A FAMILY PORTRAIT?
Absolutely, we encourage parents to have a photo with their new baby. You may or may not feel that you would like to be photographed, but it is something you should seriously consider as this is a moment that will always be treasured. However, we do not pressure you if you don’t want to.
We encourage sibling shots with baby, but due to space this may be done separately to the parent shot. This is something we will discuss in your pre-consultation, because how we pose baby with sibling depends very much on age of the sibling(S). We politely ask that other children are brought in towards the end of the session, to ensure a smooth session.
WHAT TO WEAR
You must feel comfortable in what you wear, however it would be helpful if Mums can bring a neutral coloured top (cream, khaki, brown, grey etc.), preferably strapless and Dads to wear a long sleeved neutral top also. The plainer the better as big patterns and logos do not work well with creating our style of portraiture and can be distracting. We also ask Dad to think about going topless having skin to skin with baby, this can make for a natural and precious image. Siblings may dress in similar colours to that of parents. You should also dress light for your newborn session for your own comfort, baby will be undressed for a lot of the session and so we keep the temperate of the room rather warm.
CAN I BRING MY CIRCUMCISED BABY?
No, please wait until after the session before carrying this out. Baby can be in some discomfort after this procedure, so posing and swaddling baby can be uncomfortable and cause pain. We only photograph babies when they are happy and content so please consider this when booking your newborn session.
CAN WE GET THE SESSION DONE WITHIN 2 HOURS?
Newborn sessions are baby-led throughout, allowing time for feeding, changing and time to settle into a nice deep sleep. Sessions last approximately 2-4 hours. It is possible that a session can be done in 2 hours if lucky, but in most cases it will be longer. We ask that you make no other appointments or plans around your session time so that you feel relaxed in knowing that you will have stunning photos of your little one to cherish forever. If you are on edge because you have to be somewhere, baby will pick up on this and it can make a session difficult. Most parents find that the session time goes very quickly and find that it is an enjoyable experience.
CAN WE EAT AT THE SESSION?
Yes of course, there is a shop across the road and you are more than welcome to eat in the studio. We will provide you with refreshments upon arrival and when requested – just ask!
